Wingnut can read.

I just finished reading Snowflower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See.

I picked it up because I really enjoyed Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden (now a major motion picture). I haven't seen the movie yet..but I read the book a few years ago.

Snowflower and the Secret Fan takes place in the late 1800s in China. Being ignorant in most of our world's history, I learned a lot about the Chinese society of that time. The way women were only viewed as a means of producing sons. If there were too many daughters in a family they were just extra mouths to feed in a man's world. But, if a women, after suffering the awful foot binding process at the age of 6, could marry into a good family (because of her "beautiful feet") and produce sons, she could up her status in society. Otherwise, they were just useless. Basically, it's a wonderfully written book, but depressing to those of us who were ignorant of these happenings before reading the book. I recommend it to those of you who like the girly stuff.

With my Boston library card, I'm planning to conquer many books... I'm on to Confessions of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella.

Happy reading to you!
